Stress is a body’s reaction to a change that requires a physical, mental or emotional adjustment or response. The feeling is experienced when a person perceives that the demands exceed their personal and social resources that he or she disposes of.

There are two types of stress: eustress and distress. Eustress is the “healthy” stress, the one that provides the feeling of fulfillment. It is made up of a process of exploring potential gains.

Distress, on the other hand, is a severe strain that results from exhaustion or an accident.

It was 1976, and The Milwaukee Sentinel was headlining: “Sexism is Pinpointed in Career Advice”. More than thirty years after, the British paper The Daily Mail, reported that sexist advice is presently damaging the job prospects for girls, as they are encouraged to take on particular industries or roles, while being diverted from others.

The Milwaukee Sentinel quoted some advice that was being given out to women back in the 70s, which read something like: “Good posture, attractive glasses, manicured hands, smooth arms and legs, proper girdles to firm buttocks – all enhance the physical qualities we have inherited. The secretary who does not make the most of her physical attributes is not doing herself justice.”

The appropriate organizational culture isn’t only about procuring the optimal internal environment, but mostly about business strategy.  As important as culture is for any organization, it becomes hard at times to keep it consistent.

Managers lay the structure for the culture of any organization and by doing so they also set the standard of values and attitudes for the workplace. At times it is difficult for managers to make a proper assessment of how organizational culture is and where it should go, even if making a right assessment is crucial in chaotic times, when bringing in some structural changes, hiring staff, downsizing, or at any other relevant moment for the company’s structure.

Different experts recommend different approaches to assessing an organization’s culture, but no matter which path a manager takes, the result must be a clear and deep understanding of the present situation and the possibility of laying a vision and objectives for the future.

When addressing a process of organization design or re-design, a crucial element to consider is productivity. The highest level of productivity is the desired result from any organizational structure, so the design should be planned and implemented around this goal.

Most organizations will experience a chaotic moment at any given business stage. In fact, as Dr. Roger K. Allen of The Center for Organizational Design, states that “a complete absence of chaos would mean that an organization could not respond to the changing demands, a sure prescription for stagnation and death.”

Job applicants tend to overlook the importance of prepping references. This step is so relevant that it can actually make a difference between getting a job or not. Even if not every employer will ask for references, when they do they will probably take reference check as a priority in hiring decisions. Job seekers must make sure their references are ready to respond favorably for them, whenever a potential employer calls for a reference check.
